PATRICK’S BIOGRAPHY

Patrick is the preaching minister for the 1300+ member Rochester Church of Christ in Rochester Hills, Michigan, an hour’s drive north of downtown Detroit and teaches special topics at nearby Rochester College. Patrick was raised by missionary parents, both of whom are still active in their 70’s. He delivers 20-35 seminars annually as well as continues his close association with mission work in Scotland, where he was a missionary, Romania, and Indonesia. He considers his life proof that God can take the weakest among us and use them to His glory.Dr. Mead is the highest rated instructor in the continuing education program at The Ohio State University; an honor he has earned for each of the last four years. He has the unique ability to distill thousands of pages of complex information and weaving it into an understandable presentation mixed with his own unique blend of Celtic humor.

His academic qualifications are as varied and – it is fair to say – as eccentric as Patrick himself. He holds undergraduate degrees in Correctional Counseling and Linguistics, graduate degrees in Counseling Psychology, two doctoral degrees – the higher one in Psychoneuroimmunology – along with several postdoctoral diplomas. He is a member of Mensa and several professional associations and holds honors from three State Governors for his volunteer work among the poor and in behalf of education.

Patrick (he prefers to be called simply by his first name rather than “doctor” or “pastor”) serves as an instructor three to five times a year at OSU and somewhat less frequently at Purdue, Indiana State University, Ohio University, the University of Michigan, and Ohio Valley College, mainly in the fields of psychology, communication, and research into Alzheimer’s disease. He continues to research and write in several fields of study — most on the graduate level for medical students or those pursuing a career in psychology.

Patrick is married to Kami Taylor Mead, an interior designer in Rochester. They have been married more than 28 years and have two wonderful children. Kara Graves is married to another Rochester minister, Joshua. Duncan is 19 and has begun his officer training in the United States Marine Corps. They are a missionary family. Patrick was raised by missionaries who traveled the world to spread the gospel of Christ. At Rochester, he is privileged to be a part of a congregation that is captured by Jesus’ mission.

Also, a man who made a rare and inspiring sacrifice on NBC’s hit show, “The Biggest Loser”.  Way to display the love of  Christ in front of our whole nation, Sean!!!

Next weekend please meet at my house at 4:00p.m. to consolidate vehicles and depart for Lake Darbonne. We will return Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The cost for the weekend is $25. To be fully prepared, I need to know ASAP and no later than Wednesday if you can make it. God has blessed our times together in amazing ways that we will never forget. Please prepare for the weekend by praying for God to unfold our minds and hearts for this special weekend. I want to encourage everyone to worship Him through the week leading up to the event by offering yourself to him in a special and unique way. There are unlimited ways we can bless the lives of others. For this week, I want to ask you to do something special to honor Jesus that is out of your routine. Church, please join us in praying that God will give us the wisdom to bless these children and their future families for eternity.

Live Video Webcast
This past week I hosted a live video internet morning devotional from my home for teens. We are going to try a children’s bed-time story Sunday night at 8:00p.m.. (Allen and Griffin want to help.) I will offer a brief story and have a prayer for the children and then visit with anyone who wants to stick around. At 8:30 p.m., I will share a verse with the teens and say a special prayer for them. You can watch live and visit with anyone who shows up. Reflections on David Jeremiah’s book “The 12 Ways of Christmas” –

Wonder –

So much wonder and awe filled this season centuries ago. The wonder of Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds, those in Bethlehem, Magi, those in the Temple, Simeon and I bet there are other unrecorded instances of awe and amazement that surrounded the birth of our Lord. How about today? What are we wondering about during a season that was meant to be in awe of the birth of our Savior?

Sacrifice –

Is Christmas more about giving or sacrifice? What a sacrifice it must have been for Jesus to leave the indescribable beauties of heaven and become one who could identify with our weaknesses.

Humility –

Is Christmas about us or Him? Is it Memas or Christmas?

Charity –

I find it quite touching that Jesus reminds us that when we give, we give to him. His first night on earth was hosted by the charitable act of an innkeeper.

Creativity –

Nothing about the first Christmas seemed to follow traditional expectations of the arrival of a dignitary. God has, is, and will do amazingly creative deeds to bless our lives. I have been truly blessed by those who have sought to honor God with their own creativity.

Simplicity –

Stop the nightmarish traps of the modern revolving door Christmas that hinders us from embracing such a marvelous time of the year. “This year, slow down, look up, breathe deeply, spend less – and simplify, simplify! The way of a calmed Christmas – simplicity!” (David Jeremiah pg.65)

Affection –

There is little doubt that our affection can be challenged this time of the year by a variety of once a year situations. However, scripture is clear about a call for affection towards church members, family, unbelievers, and those in need. What type of affection are we exhibiting and not exhibiting towards those God has placed in our lives?

Reflection –

Luke 2:19 – Luke 2:19 (NIV) “19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Some of the most fantastic moments of Christmas come from being still and reflecting on the blessings of Christmas. Psalms 4:4 (NIV) “4 … when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Selah”

Giving –

Jesus was the first Christmas gift and the introduction to our hope. This gift has given us the right to become the ‘children of God”(John1:12)

Music –

I find it interesting that older generations of Christians thought their hymnals were just about as valuable to them as their Bibles. Music helps the truths of Christmas sink into our souls.

Children –

Matthew 7:9-11 (NIV)
9 “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Kids don’t worry about the threats of Coal in your stocking! Just read to your parents Matthew 7:9-11. Wait! Maybe it might be better to leave the verse lying around the house. :-)

Tradition –

May our traditions and imagination games remind us of the Glory of God. Pastor Nicholas’ 4th century good deeds were meant to give the glory to God. How can we develop and introduce traditions that will bless our families long after we are gone?

Don’t miss our Sunday Morning Class at 9:30 a.m. based on 12 Biblical Virtues that should fill our holiday season. The class curriculum is based off of David Jeremiah’s book, “The 12 Ways of Christmas”.

Thankful

Philippians 4:8 (NIV)
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.

God, may my thoughts bring you praise! I am very thankful that God has led me and my family to serve at Forsythe! I wanted to share with you a few of the qualities I have noticed over the last couple of months that fill me with thankfulness as I reflect on the beauty of this special church:

A tremendous outpouring of hospitality

People rejoicing with those who rejoice and mourning with those who mourn

People who like to build others up

Really neat kids hungering for God’s word and the opportunity to serve Him

Students consistently attending worship services without parental encouragement

Students who love to help without grumbling or complaining

People who are humble enough to say why they appreciate others

Parents who despite facing adversity always take time to say thank you

People giving up their entire weekend serving in thankless tasks with a joyful and dedicated spirit

Grown adults who show through their time and money that they would prefer to believe in what God can do through this generation than condemn them

Numerous creative projects and personal deeds that are done in humility to minister to those in need

Young and Old who in humility take time to give deep and sincere encouragement

People who are willing to risk the vulnerability of giving a sincere compliment

Sisters in Christ wanting to honor their church family members with a birthday party furnished with homemade chicken and dumplings - Just Because they love

People saying thank you

People who care for their ill family members

People who dream about how they can help bless the kingdom of God

People who hand you a check and say, “This is for the kids.”

Church family who call their family when they don’t see them because they really missed them

People who take the high road despite numerous opportunities to take one of Satan’s shortcuts

People who stood strong against the temptation of gossip

Teachers who refuse to give up pouring their hearts into teaching God’s children

People who despite very discouraging situations, remain joyful and trust in a wonderful God

And I am thankful for a friend who has had a year filled with real life nightmares, sincerely share with the congregation he serves why he should be thankful.

God, before, during, and after the thanksgiving holiday may my heart be filled with the thankfulness of the glory you have revealed.

Allen, Griffin, and their homeboy – Darth Vader

Last night was very encouraging as I noticed so many of our members and guests joyfully interacting with the children.   Smiles and laughter filled the parking lot as so many  partnered in loving on the numerous children.  In a dark cruel world, loving places can be hard to find.  I believe Forsythe is a place where you can find many opportunities to share in Loving on others.   It is a privilege to be apart of such a family.

I want to thank you again for your hard work and commitment to strengthening the faith of the present and future kingdom of God. It was beautiful to see Christ present in the lives of His servants as you honored His sacrifice through your labor.
